Question 1: i) 91 Day Treasury Bill – it is a government issued debt obligation that matures in 91 days. It is sold at a discount and the buyer is paid the face value at maturity. The yield is the difference between the discounted price and the face value. ii) 90 Day Commercial Paper – it is a promissory note issued by a company that matures in 90 days. In case the issuing company defaults, the buyer has no recourse. A Debate on Political Philosophy: Hamilton Versus Jefferson Essay

In the late 1700s to the early 1800s, the United States was in need of a political philosophy that interpreted the Constitution loosely, avoided possibly catastrophic wars, and built up the economy in the easiest and most efficient way possible, all which were found best in Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton believed that the time called for a loose interpretation, or construction, of the Constitution. He and his Federalist followers invoked the idea of â€Å"elastic clause†, a way in which the people could bend exactly what the Founding Fathers were saying to help make it apply to the problems of the time. See more: Foot Binding In China essay The nation and her Constitution were still young and growing, and the ability to form the government as the country progressed was essential to having any national growth at all. Jefferson, on the other hand, believed in a strict construction of the Constitution and the rights of individual states, not federal unity like Hamilton did. Unfortunately, it was clear to many that the rights of individual states, similar to the states’ rights that they had experienced under the Articles of Confederation, were not making the nation stronger, but instead getting each state into more trouble, politically and economically. Foreign affairs also impacted why Hamilton’s Federalist philosophy worked for the time. As the United States was just coming out of a war, we were weak: militarily, economically, and politically. The last thing that we needed was to enter into the French Revolutionary War that held enormous stakes. The Jeffersonians, however, favored honoring the 1778 French-American Alliance that we had made, in order to repay them for helping us win our freedom, even though the French had never officially called on America to honor the alliance. George Washington, sensing that war would be too much for such a fragile nation, issued the 1793 Neutrality Proclamation warning Americans not to be partial to either side, so America would be better protected. Hamilton’s economic policies and financial system was also the most effective way to build the new economy up. Hamilton’s policies were shaped to favor the wealthy, but in such a way that the wealthy would lend the government money and give it political support, which would then cause the federal regime to strive, higher classes to fatten and grow with new wealth, and prosperity to trickle to the masses. Hamilton believed in forming a national credit out of all the states debts, as well as creating a Bank of the United States to have the government support itself in stock. Jefferson believed, contrary to Hamilton’s more â€Å"urban† views of economic progress, that rural and private farming would be the fairest way to build up the economy – from the bottom classes up. However, this would have been a very time consuming process and was therefore not suited for the infant America, who needed to grow quickly to find its place in the rest of the world. Jefferson also thought a Bank of the United States was unconstitutional and forbidden by the Founding Fathers instructions in the Constitution. However, Hamilton proved that the Constitution permitted it by showing how the Constitution stipulates that Congress may pass any laws â€Å"necessary and proper† to carry out the powers vested in the various government agencies, including the powers to collect taxes and regulate trade, therefore making a communal bank for the nation ideal and very beneficial to building and supporting an economy. In today’s American, however, Jefferson’s philosophy would be much better suited. Today, it seems as though we have almost lost track of what the Founding Fathers wanted for this country, so going back to a stricter construction of the Constitution would stop many of the questionable laws passed thanks to an overly bendable elastic clause. Also, since the United States has been caught up in meddling in so many other nations’ political affairs as of late, we need to be reminded of honoring our alliances and keeping an open mind when dealing with other countries that are in a current struggle. Now that we are an experienced nation in how to achieve and maintain independence, we are strong enough to help other countries do the same, although we would not have been in 1789 for the French Revolution. Finally, today’s America has a very strong and stubborn upper class that, much of the time, promises to allow profit to trickle through to the extremely large middle class but does not follow through with those plans. Since it is too hard to work with the upper class to give prosperity to the lower classes, using Jefferson’s philosophy of building up from the bottom, though it make take a while, will eventually work and make the American more equal. Overall, Hamilton’s ideas of a more loose construction of the Constitution, caution when it came to foreign affairs, and working through the wealthy to give prosperity to all Americans were well suited to the late 1700s and early 1800s. However, now that times are different, Jefferson’s ideas are more applicable to our country’s needs of a more regulated government, more positive foreign affairs and well thought out foreign policies, and an equal economy that starts with helping the lower and middle classes to expand and grow in their own way.

These changes of where people live also influenced how people lived. The historian Briggs (1990) described heaving, industrial Manchester as the ‘shock city’ in the 1830s. Among all the changes experienced with urbanisation some of these changes included the intensity of people liv ing together ay greater densities than ever experienced in the countryside, people had new associations with boundaries and a different grasp of ‘public’ and ‘private’ space. But more importantly they had to learn how to be a neighbour in a city. The boundaries between ‘public’ and ‘private’ are still evident in cities today. Kate Fox describes it as the ‘geography of neighbouring’. In every community there is an informal negotiation of space which establishes the daily functioning of the neighbourhood. Boundaries and communal junctions are places of interaction and for exchanges of pleasantries. Jovan Byford explains that most interactions occur over a boundary, a fence or in a public space like a street instead of in a personal private domain. Harris and Gale (2004) conducted a study to examine neighbourly relations and they found the trend that most interviewees explained that if they go out of the house and see other neighbours they will chat but do not necessarily go to each other’s houses.

Over the last decade of volatile and often rising oil prices, a vast peak oil literature has emerged citing the geological finitude of petroleum as a harbinger of an era of catastrophic energy scarcity. (Matthew 816-826) Concerns about oil resources is one of humanitys greatest issues, people overused of oil will bring a huge of negative impacts to people’s lives, such as economic issue and environmental issue. Therefore, saving oil resource and developing new energy are becoming important task of human being. When people began to invent and started to use of the motor vehicle, they did not realized that the shortage of oil resources will bring a huge negitive affect to human society. Also, a view of the global economic system as one divided between certain industrialized nations that control wealth and developing countries that are controlled and exploited. While, these effects does gradually emerge day by day. A decade year ago, the international energy experts predicted that there had been only 40 years enough of oil resources on the earth. (Kuo 8) However, from the current situation, the 40 years projection period is clearly to break now. Futhermore, the decrease of the annual global oil production is associated with most of countries and regions will reach to oil resources possibilities in their forecaste period and they start to decrease oil production. (Vysotskii 11) Therefore, people need to develop the new energy resources. While,the nature gas as an abudant and affordable energy which is given to people a good option. (Kuo 9) There more and more vechiles are used in the big cites such as Beijing , Newyork , Tokyo , Paris ,etc. So, the more demand of vechiles means that the more quantity of oil we need. kuo 9) In U. S, oil resoursce always a big issue to people , for example,the world’s price of the gaslion has a big influece to people’s lives. As we know that oil price is becoming more and more expensive , therefore we need to use more natural gas to our auto vechiles instead of the peak oil. (Kuo 11) On the other hand, the oil resources lead to many wars happened and the oil price is unstable. Therefore, with higher oil prices, the demand of natural gas is raising so that people pefer to choose natural gas as new energy resource. Justine, 70) Moreover, the overused of the oil has the disadvantage to our environment and personal safety. For example, the petrol engine exhaust emissions of Vehicles has seriously affected peoples living environment and air quality. There are currently no alternative sources of energy or raw materials that can take the place of oil to allow people in developed societies to continue to live as they are currently living. ( Tranter and Sharpe 182) So people need to explore new energy instead of the peak oil. Otherwise, the harm will effect people’s next generation. Especially, the children will take the risk of the cheap oil issues. For example, cheap oil has allowed many parents feel not safety for their children play outside because it could cause the traffic accident. (Tranter and Sharpe 184) Therefore, natural gas is a fundamental element in the future energy supply mix, and it has fewer harmful pollutants and can help people create a cleaner and more healthy environment. (Kuo 10) An area of study that is concerned with the interrelationships between people and their environment. â€Å"Nevertheless, since the world has such gigantic reserves of natural gas available, and oil is clearly on the wane, the use of nature gas to replace oil is highly probable whatever happens. We must not forget, that replacing oil by natural gas produces far less pollution and, if carefully extracted, can help assure a cleaner environment with huge benefits for transport, health, industries and electricity generation. (Kuo 9) Therefore, the excessive use of oil resource is not only effect environment but also hurts personal safety. Human being is a big family in the world, so we should protect the shortage energy and invent some new resources instead of the oil resource for our future lives. As defined by the world health organization, a state of complete physical, mental, and social well- being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.

The magazine changed from one week to the next as they tried different ideas. Still, the topics offered readers a full range of information and photographs regarding different sports. Once the readership became established, executives enticed fans with a three-page centre foldout of 1954 Topps baseball cards. Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll is a well known and talked about author, whose writings have stirred up much controversy. His work has inspired ballot, puppet shows, and even music videos. (Vink). Lewis Carroll is an outstanding English writer because of his background, his position in English literature, and his many works, such as his novel, â€Å"Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.† â€Å"‘Lewis Carroll,’ as he was to become known, was born on January 27, 1832 (Leach 1). He was raised on a parsonage that was located in the middle of a cornfield. The family even raised livestock to supplement their income. Carroll was the oldest of four boys and seven girls. He referred to his mother as â€Å"‘one of the sweetest and gentlest women that ever lived,’ and was notable for the energy with which she ran the household.† ( Carpenter and Prichard 97). She taught all her children at home while they were young. His father was an ordained priest. It was in 1843 when Carroll was eleven, the family moved to Yorkshire. This was a much more lucrative living arrangement; in fact, the house was â€Å"... so big that Mr. Dodgson was able to find room on the grounds for a school holding about [sixty] children† (97).
